First off let me state that this article is written due to allot of buzz I have heard around various channels about this issue. I frankly have my own stance on the issue but I will leave that out for latter.
Let’s classify Doom 3 for what it is (and we are totally talking multiplayer here), a faced paced sci-fi shooter, that’s the category it falls into.
It seems that lately most sci-fi shooters have pretty much as a rule included a; high damage, single shot, slow reload, hit scan weapon. These weapons are one of the most preferred weapons by many of the top players out there. With good aim you can pretty much instantly hurt your opponent and follow up with a finishing weapon, or in extreme situations flat out kill them. Allot of us have come to rely on these weapons as one of our most reliable means of raking up the damage at almost any range, with them flat out dominating medium to extreme ranges in some situations… and a few of us have gotten good enough to base an entire game plan off of them (should the map permit such tactics).
So here is Doom 3, in all it’s glory, and it’s making a significant bid to become one of the most competitive games. Well great most of us were waiting for it, and it has a chance. However it lacks any such weapon. This has caused allot of griping and allot of bad blood over how people view it’s potential.
The question shouldn’t be “why is there no such gun?”, but “do we really need such a gun?”.
Cue my rant.
First off the maps in Doom 3 are very claustrophobic. We don’t have any extreme range situations. So why include a weapon for such ranges?
Also Doom 3 doesn’t have a fast weapon swap out rate. So why would one want a massive first hit, with a long reload, and a low swap out rate? You’d get toasted before you could land that second hit, or swap guns.
So then we can argue the issue of finishing off an injured opponent. Well that’s debatable. At the ranges Doom 3 is played at there are several great options for just such a situation, would including a high powered hit scan really matter?
Lighting, yeah I will throw it out there and stir the hate. The maps are dark, are you really going to be able to see the person enough to make use of snap shots with such a gun. Granted their might be chances to, but with a slow swap rate you would have to march around the map with it, and if you didn’t get that first shot you would die.
Personally I am one of those that primarily relied on hit scan, and to tell the truth I miss pulling my cheese with it. However I don’t think it’s needed, nor do I think it would be that useful.
So in closing, to those griping, SHUT IT. Then take some time to think about the situation, it makes sense.
P.S.
Since when did Doom ever have such a weapon ;)
