Well Doom 3 has been out for a while now. The initial rush of the sale is over, Doom 3 leagues have sprung up, and the game is starting to carve out it's place in gaming. However the situation now is not what most predicted it would be, and has left some wondering what shape the game is in. I'm going to try to debunk some myths and explain just exactly where D3 stands, and what got it here.

To start off D3 has the sales to have a thriving community. The sheer number of copies sold is staggering. And it's no wonder why. Carrying the line of one of the most loved (and controversial) titles of all time, the game made news, not only in the gaming community, but in the main stream media So when faced with D3's less than expected online numbers the question is... Where are they now?

Well D3 was shipped as a single player game, and has made it's mark as such. The single player campaign is truly immersing and very well done. It's no surprise that allot of gamers are still playing the single player campaign at this point. I'd wager that if you included single player numbers into the mix, D3 would actually have more active players than allot of it's competition.

The next argument is that “D3 is to brutal on hardware, people simply can't play it”, I'm going to call bullox on this. D3 scales remarkably well to lesser systems. Besides at this point so many games are hardware hogs that most people already had systems able to run it respectably (hence why they bought it, the sales prove this). Also when one plays a game PVP you tend to crank down the eye candy in order to function at such a rapid pace.

The first argument that holds any water is this, the multi player was buggy at the release. Yes this is true, the browser did have issues, and weapons had some as well. However this has been fixed, the only issue remaining is lack of a redirect (more on this later).

The final issue is the lack of content/maps/game play (maps can make or break game play so I am going to leave this here). Well yes true the game shipped with a couple stock maps, not all were good, and yes it's only DM right now. However good custom maps are coming fast and furious. From remakes of great classic maps, to new and original maps. So what's the problem? Well first off allot of these maps are single player maps, which keeps people offline (though still having a blast with the game). The second problem is no redirect, you must have the map first. With an array of servers using a vast array of maps the situation is not good. It's a pain in the rear to have to search for that obscure map, dl it, and then rejoin the server. Sadly this means till we have a redirect, the flow of custom maps is a double edged sword.

So given all that, what lies in store for D3?

Single player is fine right now, and the influx of new maps will keep it alive for a long time. Multilayer will improve.

Mods, Mods, Mods. There are several stellar mods on their way out. These mods will break the DM only mold D3 is in, and will attract allot of gamers from other games, as well as drag some of the single player group online.

We also have the D3 expansion on it's way out. While there is no doubt this will deliver another slew of SP goodness, it will probably boost multi player as well. While I personally am hoping for a redirect (I'm pretty sure it will happen they can't really afford NOT to have one), I am also looking forward to some quality maps.

Doom3 on release was a ground breaking single player game, with a solid start on it's displayer's life. Granted it's been a bumpy road so far but there is more solid content coming out at a fast rate. I for one am anxiously waiting the expansion, as well as the slew of stellar mods coming out. It's an incredible game right now, and it's going to get better.
