Well the first time through the game was magic. The second time has been fairly good as well (go nightmare) but I wonder how much replay value the single player holds.
Firstly there is the plot issue. In most single player games a large part of the fun is figuring out the story and what’s going on around you, however once you know what’s going on this fun decreases. The discovery of the PDA’s isn’t as important and you already know all the door combo’s. So I guess to sum it up this looses its value.
The combat. This is kind of tricky, the way I see this breaks down a couple ways. The first is the enemies that “sneak” up on you. Which is actually only id being sneaky with spawns and well placed enemies. Once you know where they are the gig is up and you can just blast the suckers at will, IMHO this part is one of my sore spots on replay. On the reverse side of it are the enemies that are just out there in your face “lets ruck” (note mostly later in the game). Since these fights are usually with the harder demons, and don’t rely on surprise, they don’t get stale redone, I’ll take another helping of these please. Then lastly there are the boss fights (see other thread for my views on that), these fights are still just as fun, but could be better. So I guess overall it’s a draw.
Now it’s time for me to piss everybody off with this. Atmosphere. Like it or not this game sold on atmosphere, and that’s the truth. There are two things that make it up the “Doom” atmosphere, and the mood of the game for this particular Doom. The good first, the game lives up to “Doom” hurray, I never got sick of the Doom feel (and I have been playing them since the first) so I doubt I will soon. That brings me to the part where I get mean, this games atmosphere. Allot of this game plays off shadows and lighting to scare you, and add to the experience. However once you have played through the game, it’s no longer dark and brooding and scary, it’s just dark. Once you know where things are and get used to the near black, it gets old. Before you string me up by my toes and cry foul let me finish. The latter part of game (once you get close to hell) however has some great industrial levels that I found incredibly cool, and don’t rely on that “no light haha be scared” trick that I like to go back and play. The dig site falls into this as well. It doesn’t rely on tricks, its just good. And finally hell, hell is awesome. It was way to short for me but it’s probably the best setting I have played in a game so far. So parts are great to replay, and parts are not that great.
Lastly there is difficulty. Fairly obvious you have a set amount of settings. I expect allot of “Doom3 done quick” vids coming out from more avid gamers, so I guess I tip my hat to id here.
